LONDON (Brand Republic) - Barclays Bank has re-opened its online banking service, after a security breach forced it to shut down yesterday.
The system was shut down for four-and-a-half hours, after Barclays received complaints from four customers who said they were able to read the details of other people’s accounts when they logged on.
Barclays said that the problem was related to a software upgrade, and could have been triggered when two people logged on at the same time. The old system has now been re-installed while the company tests the new one.
A spokeswoman for the National Consumer Council criticised the bank for its security slip, saying that e-commerce will not take off until companies such as Barclays address consumers’ concerns over security.
