Whitton will report to Barclaycard's chief marketing officer, Libby Chambers.

Gary Twelvetree, who has been working as chief marketing officer for the brand's UK cards division, will continue in his role as director of brand and advertising.

Whitton left her job as head of marketing communications at BA at the end of last year. She was one of 450 senior managers to accept voluntary redundancy from the airline.

At BA, Whitton oversaw the appointment of OgilvyOne to the carrier's direct marketing account and the roll-out of the 'Terminal 5 is working' campaign last summer.

She joined BA from American Express in May 2007.

Whitton's first job at Barclaycard will be to conclude a review of the brand's direct marketing agency arrangements. All roster agencies, including EHS Brann, have been invited to repitch.

Barclaycard is attempting to position itself as a music-friendly brand through partnerships with ticket website Live Nation and broadcaster Global Radio, and title sponsorship of the Mercury Prize.
