Badly Drawn Boy to play local chipshop in fan competition

LONDON - Badly Drawn Boy is to feature in an EMI and Yahoo! competition, which involves the singer songwriter playing in someone's local chipshop.

The competition is inspired by the subject matter of Badly Drawn Boy, aka Damon Gough's latest album, 'Born in the UK', which takes a sideways look at British culture. Ten chipshops across the UK have been shortlisted as potential venues for the one-off gig.

Fans can vote for a chipshop by visiting the Badly Drawn Boy , and using the Yahoo! Map service to locate which venue is nearest to them, and the winner will be announced on October 31.

Eric Winbolt, digital media manager at EMI, said: "Our objective was to use the online mechanic to complement and strengthen the offline promotion.

"Integrating with Yahoo! Maps allowed a strong creative execution to be married to the functionality of the maps tool."

The Badly Drawn Boy official homepage also features a forum for fans to post images and comments on why their local chip shop is the best.

Gough rose to fame after securing the Mercury Prize for his debut album 'Hour of Bewilderbeast' in 2000. He also wrote the soundtrack to the 2002 movie 'About a Boy', starring Hugh Grant.

The 10 chip shops participating are: Ann's Fry, Glasgow; Smith's Ideal Fisheries, Grimsby; Brett's Fish Restaurant, Leeds; Mr Chips, Hereford; Toffs, London; Ocean Fish Bar, Wolverhampton; Bardsley's, Brighton; Rock & Sole Plaice, London; Brunswick Fish & Chips, Manchester; and Magnet, Bristol.

The promotion for 'Born in the UK', which is out now, is being supported by national radio ads and a poster campaign.

The campaign has been organised by creative design agency Onyro.
