The app, , enabled users to search for vehicle information, providing model and make details, and listing near-by cars and dealerships.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) complained to the motoring website that the image-recognition aspect of the app is "unethical", and so Auto Trader has agreed to relaunch the app without it.

However, Auto Trader insists the app breaks no laws and draws only on publicly available information.

A spokesperson said: "Although the app in no way infringes data privacy regulations, the ‘snap' function conflicts with the DVLA's code of ethics, we take consumer security extremely seriously and so have happily agreed to comply with the DVLA's request."

The app is being relaunched today (30 March) with the ‘snap' function removed, as well as an update for those who had previously downloaded it.
