Asthma UK launches first TV campaign through Claydon Heeley

LONDON - Asthma UK has launched its first TV ad to help combat child deaths from the condition, by raising awareness among parents and teachers of how serious asthma attacks can be and what to do when they happen.

The charity's "Deadly serious" campaign, which will run during daytime television hours, aims to raise awareness of asthma-related deaths among UK children.

There are currently 5.2m asthma sufferers in the UK, and each day three people die as a result of an asthma attack. Around 1.1m asthma sufferers are children.

Asthma UK says these deaths could be avoided if children, parents and teachers were encouraged to carry an Asthma Attack Card, carrying basic information of what to do in an emergency.

This, rather than a cash request is the message of the ad, created by Claydon Heeley Jones Mason. The ad encourages people to phone to get a card, and the charity will follow up at a later date to try to convert responders into donors.

Donna Covey, Asthma UK's chief executive, said: "People should not be complacent. Over 400,000 people with asthma have attacks that are so severe they are unable to ask for help. Even people with mild asthma are at risk of having a fatal attack if their asthma isn't under control."

The ads will feature the tagline "Don't underestimate asthma, it's a fatal mistake". Media buying is by Mike Colling & Company.
