The supermarket giant sent a leaflet to residents in Manningtree, Essex, which said figures showed the area had a need and demand for the proposed Tesco store.
However, figures from a telephone poll showed that only 8.6% of residents believed a new supermarket wasa needed in the area, with only 38 out of 440 people surveyed responding positively to the idea.
The ASA said Tesco had failed to substantiate that there was a need and demand for a new food store and concluded that the claim was misleading.
