Arla profits hit by Middle East boycott over Danish cartoons

LONDON - Denmark-based Dairy producer Arla has confirmed that this year's boycott of its products in the Middle East will hit profits by around DKK400m (£36.4m).

Half-year profits were £9.1m below budget at £21.6m.

The firm, which owns the Cravendale milk and Lurpak butter brands, was hit by a boycott of its products in the Middle East from February when a Danish newspaper published controversial cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

Arla admits that consumers in Saudi Arabia, which provides around two thirds of the firm's income, are still boycotting its products. However, it says sales have now returned to pre-boycott levels in most other Gulf states.
