Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple said: "iPad is something completely new. We're excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before."
The iPad's unveiling in January was one of the most hotly anticipated technology launches ever. The device, essentially a tablet computer, has been hailed as the saviour of print media.
The iPad has a Multi-Touch interface similar to the iPhone and allows users to read and send email, import photos and see them as slide shows, watch films and TV shows in HD, flip through an ebook and listen to music as well as download applications and browse the web.
Other countries to get the iPad by late April include Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and Switzerland.
