
Faircliff, general manager for Reuters Media, told the hundreds of delegates congregating at London's Westminster Park Plaza for the body's ninth annual event: "The first rule of online revenue is there are no rules. The second rule is we just have to deal with it."
Faircliff said the AOP census had "highlighted the division of business models used acoss the UK" and laid out the questions facing many publishers that he hoped would be debated during an "enjoyable, enlightening day".
Do Facebook and Twitter add to our businesses, asked Faircliff, should we be behind paywalls or open, adding that investment in innovation and people remained key.
The theme for this year's Associaton of Onine Publishers event is Building World Class Digial Media Businesses.
In his welcome note, AOP director Lee Baker said the programme would focus on four key areas, world class editorial, diversifying revenues, building B2B value and implementing world class technology.
Speakers come from across the publishing and media industry spectrum incorporating digital, print and radio, editorial and commercial, and include Guardian News and Media's Tim Brooks, Global Radio's Stephen Miron, Yahoo's Chris Barr and The Times' Gurtej Sandhu.
Keynote speakers include Jacek Utko, design director at Bonnier Business Press International and Jay Altshuler, Unilever's global media communications planning director.
