In July, 2008 Whitten was promoted to director of publisher services for AOL's now-defunct ad division Platform-A UK, where he directed a 16-strong team responsible for the acquisition and management of media and data across Platform-A's display, video, behavioural, mobile and affiliate networks.

Previously, he was head of UK publisher services at AOL subsidiary Advertising.com.

Whitten has also represented Platform-A on the Internet Advertising Sales Houses council, and at the Association of Online Publishers.

In July 2009, he was recognised as one of Media Week's 30 under 30 rising stars of the media industry.
