The spending for the quarter surpassed the previous record of $6.4bn (£4.5bn) that was set during the December 2000 quarter -- traditionally the biggest retail period of the year. Analysts were surprised that spending in the quarter ending March 31 was higher than in the holiday period.
AOL said that 17m users -- almost three-quarters of its US members -- now shop online, according to data from research firm Ascolese Associates.
Over the last year, the fastest growing purchasing categories were furniture, theatre and sporting tickets, clothing and groceries.
The announcement came a day after the company said it was hiking the price for its US flat-rate internet access by $1.95 (£1.38) to $23.95 (£16.93) from July.
A spokeswoman for AOL UK said the UK price would remain unchanged.
