The rights were bought by the interactive television company Video Networks for 拢30m, but it pulled the service earlier this year after running into financial difficulties, and gave the rights back to the Premier League.
AOL would use the rights to offer pay-per-view highlights of Premiership games, with reports saying that the Premier League is considering extending the rights from until the end of the 2003-2004 season until 2007.
At the same time, America Online is launching a $35m (拢22m) marketing campaign in the US which will see the internet service provider introduce a new slogan: "Welcome to the Worldwide Wow". It is aimed at internet users who are abandoning America Online in favour of broadband access.
America Online already shows highlights from Italian football and rugby internationals, as well as entertainment specials such as the Academy Awards.
Yahoo!, which has launched a broadband service in the US, has recently unveiled a subscription service that will let users watch basketball, news, weather and entertainment clips online.
