Launched in the UK last year, the initiative has been designed to support, inspire and promote small businesses. American Express credit cardholders will also have the chance to receive £5 credit for every £10 spent in-store at participating small businesses.

The company has teamed up with three celebrities to support the cause. Artist and designer of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover Sir Peter Blake will be creating a celebratory piece of art featuring small businesses from across the UK, while filmmaker Heidi Greensmith has created a specially-commissioned film that shows a day in the life of three small independent shop owners.

Model and actress Daisy Lowe has also been brought on board and will spend the day lending her support to a currently unconfirmed independent business.

Rafa Marquez, American Express UK managing director, said: "American Express has a long history of working with small businesses and we recognise the vital contribution they make to the UK economy. We are therefore delighted to be collaborating with such passionate advocates from the world of film, art and fashion to shine a spotlight on these often unsung heroes of our high street."

Other events taking place include a bus tour of the UK to raise awareness on the run-up to Small Business Saturday. Four free workshops designed to support and inspire small business have also been organised. The Inspire Series includes talks from chair of the Small Business Charter Sir Peter Bonfield, which took place on 5 November, and co-founder of StartUp Britain Emma Jones at Somerset House on 20 November.
