The Alzheimer's Society is planning its first brand awareness advertising in the new year and has approached several agencies to pitch for the business.

The charity is keen to build its profile and communicate to the public the devastating impact that Alzheimer's Disease has on sufferers and their families.

It has drawn up a shortlist of three unnamed agencies, and expects to announce the result early in the new year. The business is believed to be worth about pounds 500,000 in the first year.

'We are expanding very quickly as an organisation, but while awareness of the disease itself has grown dramatically in the past ten years, the profile of the charity has not changed to anything like the same extent,' said Alzheimer's Society head of public affairs Rebecca Gray.

Alzheimer's Society's direct marketing activity is handled by Target Direct Marketing. The charity has also run awareness activity on the healthcare pages of several national newspapers.

Around 700,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia.
