
The discount supermarket, which now has a market share of 5.6%, according to this month’s data from Kantar Worldpanel, said it would recruit 5000 more store staff to support the expansion.
It bears out a report by The Sunday Telegraph in November that Aldi and Lidl were plotting to open more than five times as many new supermarkets as the ‘Big Four’.
According to the report, Aldi filed 93 planning applications to open new stores, while Lidl lodged 78. In stark comparison, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Asda filed a total of just 29 planning applications.
Just before Christmas, Waitrose announced it would open 13 new stores in 2016, including five supermarkets and nine Little Waitrose convenience shops.
