News Group Newspapers has been without a marketing director since Belinda Furneaux-Harris was axed in April after just nine months in the job.
Agambar left News Group, where he was marketing manager of The Sun, to fill the vacant marketing director post at Express Newspapers and worked on the launch of the Daily Star Sunday.
He joins the paper during at a bleak time for the tabloid market as sales slip. On Friday, the Daily Mirror, the Daily Star and The Sun were all down on the month in the latest newspaper ABC figures. The Mirror was down 1.51% to 1,793,718, the Daily Star 2.13% to 899,773 and The Sun down 0.81% to 3,336,422.
It had been reported that after Furneaux-Harris left, the role of marketing director had been killed off. With her departure, News Group general manager Richard Webb took over responsibility for the group's marketing department.
A number of names had been linked to the top marketing job at News International's tabloid publishing business, including former marketing chief Ellis Watson, who is now Mirror Group general manager.
Watson, a former News Group marketing director, was reported to have held talks about a possible return. However, he denied he was set to move back.
Furneaux-Harris was seen as a left-field choice when she was appointed last year. Prior to joining News Group, she had a three-year spell as the marketing services director at Barclays and before that held a senior marketing role at HSBC.
