Adshel beats JCDecaux to retain £250m London bus shelter contract

LONDON - Clear Channel's Adshel division has won an important 10-year bus shelter contract from Transport for London, worth £250m.

The outdoor group recaptured the business after a hard-fought battle against JCDecaux. Viacom Outdoor and Maiden also tendered for the business.

TfL's outdoor business, covering London bus shelters and other sites, has been with Clear Channel's Adshel arm for 25 years.

The new contract is the most lucrative to date and covers selling ad space, maintenance and design across approximately half of TfL's bus shelters. Adshel also manages the other half in a separate 10-year contract won last year.

The new contract will treble TfL's annual revenue from bus shelters.

Chris Townsend, TfL's director of group marketing, said: "Trebling and guaranteeing the annual return from the bus shelter business is unprecedented and demonstrates our ability to maximise revenues from our valuable advertising estates."

Julie France, group managing director of Clear Channel UK, said the win was a reward for the successful working relationship that Adshel has had with Transport for London over the past 25 years.

"From an advertising perspective, the win consolidates Adshel's position as the six-sheet market leader, with 65% of roadside six-sheets including the key contracts in seven of the top 10 largest conurbations in the UK," she said.

TfL's tendering process for the London Underground contract, currently held by Viacom Outdoor, is still ongoing.
