Ad festival will stay in Cannes

LONDON - The International Advertising Festival will take place in Cannes next year, despite earlier disputes with the town's mayor and speculation that the event would be moved.

The organisers said that they have settled the dispute over contractual issues with mayor Bernard Brochand's office and are "very happy it's all been resolved". Brochand, who is also DDB Worldwide's vice-chairman, was elected earlier this year.

The 49th Cannes Lions Festival, the largest of its kind, will take place in June next year at its traditional beachfront location. The organisers had considered Barcelona or Venice as alternatives but there were fears that this would affect the event's popularity.

Despite the rising costs implemented by the mayoral office, 9,000 advertising delegates are expected at the conference and awards ceremony in 2002.
