About.com cuts workforce by almost 10%

NEW YORK - Nineteen staff have lost their jobs at About.com, the online encyclopaedia owned by the New York Times Company.

had to reduce 9.5% of its workforce having already imposed a pay freeze and limited discretionary spending.

The cuts were made across sales, client services, marketing and editorial roles.

It is the latest in a growing number of digital sector job losses in the US.

This week the online shopping venture closed with the loss of ten jobs.

Last week AOL said it intended to take out 700 jobs or 10% of its workforce and News Corporation unit Fox Interactive Media axed 100 -- 5% of its staff.
