Marie Claire: further decline in ABCs

IPCMedia's Marie Claire is one of a number of high-profile titles likely to suffer in the latest round of Audit Bureau of Circulation figures, to be released next week.

According to agency predictions, the title could lose 7.5% period on period, following losses of 4.7% in the previous period, and the high-profile arrival in the market of Condé Nast's Glamour.

The National Magazine Company's Cosmopolitan is predicted to be slightly down compared to the last period, while Emap's Red is predicted to increase slightly, but IPC's Women's Journal is expected to suffer a double digit dip.

Circulation, say agency experts, will be generally flat across the women's sector, reflecting a market with too many titles to sustain the high circulations of the past.

"The days of massive circulations are now over," says Noleen Wyatt-Jones, press manager at Zenith Media.

However, the celebrity market looks set for a boost with IPC's Now predicted to be up around 20% and Emap's Heat due to show a continued rise. Within the men's market, Esquire is expected to fall a further 10%, Loaded to dip 11% and Men's Health is facing a fall of 25%, according to press directors. Overall, the sector is expected to reflect the general downturn.

The home interest sector could also see a double digit drop, say industry sources; with smaller titles, in particular, feeling the squeeze.

Teen title Star is believed to be living up to its name with its first ABC release. But with the launch of CosmoGirl and ElleGirl in September, this market could be set for its own over crowding.
