MailOnline also recorded the largest year-on-year growth in monthly visitor numbers, up 48%. The site also achieved the most UK monthly users, with 15,943,521 domestic browsers during the month, equivalent to 36% of its online audience.

Elsewhere, the month of July, which included the final of the Fifa World Cup, saw numbers dip for the rest of UK's national newspaper sites.

Monthly browsers for second-placed dropped 1.9% to 34,590,814, but were still up 28% year on year. The site for The Guardian and The Observer attracted 13,733,357 of unique monthly users, some 40% of its overall figure.

Falls were more pronounced at , where monthly browsers slipped 5.6% to 31,753,462. This equated to a 20% lift year on year. The right-wing newspaper also has a lower UK digital following than its peers, with 34% or 10,637,465 browsers.

The reported monthly falls of 2.6% to 10,320,996, a 23% lift since July 2009. Like the Guardian, some 40% of the site’s total browsers emanated from the UK, to total 4,720,891.

Meanwhile, the widely reported hunt, and ultimate death, of Raoul Moat was not enough to prevent falls for the only audited tabloid site either.

recorded July traffic down 1.7% from June to 10,989,690, representing only a modest annual rise of 5.6% from July 2009.

The site for the only red-top to publish its ABCe figures can boast the highest percentage of UK audience however: at 5,958,136, local advertisers will pleased to note more than half of its monthly uniques (54%) are based in the UK.

News International's rival , along with stablemate , currently do not provide any transparent figures for online, following the company’s foray into paywalls.
