ABCe - Men's titles hold sway in online magazine market

Men's magazines continue to dominate the online segment of the magazine market, with Bauer Media's FHM proving the most popular lads' magazine online, with 2,033,105 unique users in April 2008.

The other big hitter is the motoring sector. This point is starkly illustrated by Autotrader.co.uk, which effortlessly outstrips all other titles' online presence, with an ABCe of 10,319,059 unique users in March 2008.

Autocar and What Car? also fared well, achieving monthly unique user figures of 403,261 and 1,329,556 respectively.

However, the ABCe audits are not solely the domain of titles targeted at men. Women's magazines also have a presence in the top 10, with Hello!'s website scoring 1,528,577 unique users in January 2008, nearly double its October 2007 figures, when it attracted 832,473 users a month.

Achieving second place in the top 10, IPC's NME.com grew by 107% to 3,501,326 unique users in June 2008. Eric Fuller, managing director of IPC Ignite, explains that much of its growth is built around the brand's multi-platform strategy.

He said: "The website has been going for 12 years, but we have kept accelerating development on the site." Fuller also attributes growth to increased search engine optimisation activity and investing in more functionality on the site, including video and social networking.

Geoff Campbell, acting managing director of Bauer Media's men's lifestyle division, says that new content and components added to FHM.co.uk have led to its 12% increase in monthly unique users.

"The other drivers have been the integrated cross-platform promotions," he says, citing initiatives such as FHM's 100 Sexiest Women - a multi-platform, multinational promotion that ran in the magazine, on the web and on mobiles in 31 countries. "It drives enormous growth in users from our core base and new consumers.

Bruce Sandell, managing director of Dennis Publishing's lifestyle section, reports that Monkey is going from strength to strength and is about to celebrate its 100th issue. "At that point, we're having a refresh of the editorial product," he says. [ends]
