The organisation is offering the Home Emergency Response policy to non-members and a discounted rate to members. It currently has in the region of 15 million people taking its motor breakdown cover.

The plumbing and electrician service, Home Assist, is being piloted in the South East.

Andrew Strong, CEO of AA Services, said: "The car is the second biggest purchase for most families after their home. Millions of car owners have trusted the AA to help them on the roadside for more than 100 years. We now want to extend that trust and help AA members in the home too.

"AA Home Emergency Response is more than insurance cover as, like AA car breakdown cover, it removes the hassle of finding a quality tradesman at short notice. The AA prides itself on great customer service and we believe that millions of householders will look to the AA to also help them in the home."

Past brand extensions have taken the AA into the insurance and financial services sectors.
