3 forced to defend video quality after ad complaints

LONDON - Hutchison has been forced to demonstrate the picture quality of its video mobile phone handsets to the advertising watchdog after viewers complained that television ads showed much better quality images than in reality.

Five viewers complained that an ad for Hutchison 3, created by TBWA\London, featured clips from Premiership football matches that were much higher quality than the service was able to achieve.

The phone maker was forced by the Independent Television Commission to demonstrate its service after admitting that it had used dummy shots in the ads.

While the ITC found that there was "no significant difference" between the quality of the advertised downloaded clips in the ad and on the phone, it has rapped Hutchison for misleading advertising because it said that the sound quality and colour on the phone were not as good as in the ad.

The ITC also rapped Hutchison for showing the image of the Premiership goal without the tool bars that feature on the handset screen. Hutchison has downgraded the images in the ad and adjusted the shot to feature the toolbars.

TBWA\London could lose the 拢30m 3 account with the phone company on the brink of reviewing.

The initial advertising campaign was not well received, with 3 reported to have signed up only 25,000 users in the first three months of operating.

This has now been replaced by an ad that shows how wrong sceptics have been in the past, opening with a shot of the Earth followed by the line: "They said it was flat." Grainy footage of early attempts at flight then feature with the line: "They said it couldn't be done."

It draws on historical events such as the lunar landing and the US civil rights movement, all done to the sound track of 'Children of the Revolution' by T-Rex.
