The move comes as Ziff Davis announced it has shortened its content licensing contract with CNET Networks and ZDNet from five years to one year. Ziff Davis magazines include titles such as PC Magazine, Yahoo! Internet Life, Family PC and The Net Economy.
"We are thrilled to have some of the world's most coveted URLs in the technology space back," said Wenda Harris Millard, president of Ziff Davis Internet and chief internet officer of Ziff Davis Media. "These new brands will embrace a combination of timely, deep content, cutting-edge technology and unique community."
Ziff Davis Internet has four aims for its internet strategy: developing new advertising platforms that provide integrated marketing solutions; reinventing its online brands to deliver a deeper level of content, functionality and community; recruiting industry veterans; and launching innovative web-based products and services.
The new sites will be a combination of well-known and new brands. "What we're not going to stop at is magazinetitle.com," said Harris Millard, who praises the internet's "granularity."
So, for example, a new brand site might be developed that appeals to overlapping market segments of PC Magazine and The Net Economy. This market might not warrant a new print magazine brand, but it can be targeted with a web site. Millard also explained how the sites will be making the most of digital technology. "We'll be launching a very exciting opportunity that makes advertising look great."
James Dunning, chairman, president and chief executive officer at Ziff Davis Media, parent company of Ziff Davis Internet, added, "The future of Ziff Davis Media's brands extends beyond the printed page. The converging media world demands the delivery of the highest quality, most timely news, information and services to its audiences - across all media channels."
