YSL to carry out threat to take legal action

Yves St Laurent (YSL) is carrying out its threat to take legal

action against Scottish Courage over the brewer's Newcastle Brown poster

campaign parodying YSL's notorious Opium ad. The luxury goods giant

first threatened to sue Scottish Courage when the Newcastle Brown

campaign, by Circus, appeared two months ago. The Opium ad, featuring

model Sophie Dahl lying naked on her back with her legs apart, attracted

a record 960 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority. ScotCo's

tongue-in-cheek spoof shows a Newcastle Brown drinker, dressed in

overalls and workboots, in the same reclining position, above the

strapline 'Brown is the new Brown'. ScotCo refused requests from YSL to

withdraw the ads and accused the company of a "sense of humour failure".

The drinks company has confirmed that YSL has lodged a formal objection.
