Xbox Gamer title relaunched as console takes off

LONDON - Future Network has relaunched its Xbox Gamer magazine in the same week that Microsoft announced it had sold more Xbox consoles in December than in any month since it was launched.

The first issue of Xbox Gamer, formerly called XGamer, is covermounted with an official guidebook for the Tom Clancy-inspired stealth action game 'Splinter Cell'.

The relaunch of the non-official title is backed by a 拢50,000 promotional spend. Xbox Gamer has a print run of 80,000 and costs 拢3.49. It is aimed at both the "hardcore" of gaming fans, as well as the more mainstream users. The second issue, which goes on sale February 19, will feature a covermounted DVD with Xbox game videos, reviews and tips.

Earlier this week, Microsoft said that Xbox was "firmly entrenched" in the number two spot in the European and US consoles market, behind Sony PlayStation, and that it was widening the gap between itself and the competition, such as Nintendo GameCube. Future says there are 600,000 Xbox users in the UK.

The title is edited by Simon Clays, formerly editor of Stuff magazine. He said: "The original XGamer was the market-leading non-official magazine during Xbox's first year. As the market has evolved into its second year, Xbox Gamer is building on that success by delivering compelling and challenging content, both in the magazine and on the covermounted DVD."

Xbox Gamer is published by FXM International, a subsidiary of Future Network and sister company to Future Publishing.
