The X Factor tops 10 million viewers

'The X Factor', the Simon Cowell-fronted fame show, continued to dominate Saturday evenings as its average audience rose above the 10-millon mark, according to unofficial overnight figures.

Saturday’s offering, the third episode of the latest series, had an audience of 10.57 million people across ITV1 and ITV1 HD, 47.7% of the TV-watching audience. The audience peaked at 12.5 million people.

When ‘The X Factor’it drew its biggest opening audience to date, with 12.6 million viewers at its peak on ITV1 and ITV1 HD. The 90-minute show had an average of 11.08 million viewers on 21 August, 48% of the total TV-viewing audience.

Last week (28 August), the average audience of ‘The X Factor’ dipped to 9.78 million between 7.30pm and 8.45pm, while the peak audience was 11.8 million.

The BBC’s big Saturday entertainment show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ starts next week, but will be broadcast between 6:25pm and 7:25pm, after BBC bosses indicated at the Edinburgh TV festival that it would not pit ‘Strictly’ against ‘The X Factor’.

BBC One’s Saturday night staple ‘Casualty’ had an audience of 5.22 million people between 8.45pm and 10.15pm on 4 September, a 24.1% share of the available audience.

The first episode of one of ITV’s new flagship dramas ‘U Be Dead’ performed strongly, with 5.23 million viewers on ITV1 and ITV1 HD between 9pm and 11pm last night – a 23.8% share of the TV-watching audience.

ITV’s autumn season of new drama includes a remake of 1970s series ‘Bouquet of Barbed Wire’, which starts tonight (Monday) at 9pm, and the costume drama, 'Downton Abbey', starring Maggie Smith.

The final episode of the nature documentary ‘Secret Britain’ at 9pm to 10pm on BBC One and BBC HD had an average audience of 5.24 million people, a 21% share of the available audience.
