LONDON - WPP Group has continued its expand in the Greater China region with the acquisition of media independent MediaCore Communications, which will be combined with Mediaedge:cia.

The agency will be renamed MEC:MediaCore and will form part of a new Group M structure, which will be led by Sandra Yu, previously CEO of MediaCore, as chairwoman of Group M Taiwan. Group M in Taiwan will also comprise the MindShare, Maxus and Chungl companies.

Founded in 1999 and based in Taipei, MediaCore's clients include Standard Foods Taiwan, Warner Music, Estee Lauder, Tricon, ING and Yahoo Taiwan.

The agency employs 36 people and had revenues of $5.8m for the year ended December 31 and net assets of $4.6m.

The investment continues WPP's strategy of developing its networks in the region, which is its fastest growing market in Asia Pacific.

Last month, WPP bought independent agency Fujian Effort Advertising, which is based in Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province, and has long been involved in cross-straits trade with Taiwan.

Miles Young, regional chairman for Ogilvy & Mather Asia Pacific, said: "China continues to be our fastest-growing market in Asia Pacific and we expect it to overtake Japan as the world's second-largest advertising market before the end of this decade."
