The World: San Francisco - Goodby scoops $1.2bn Sprint Nextel account

Sprint Nextel, the third-largest mobile provider in the US, has hired Goodby, Silverstein & Partners to handle its $1.2 billion assignment.

The appointment comes as major mobile companies struggle to differentiate their offerings in a market which is close to saturation point.

There are currently 230 million subscribers across the US, and it is thought that about two-thirds of Americans likely to acquire a mobile phone already have one.

The review originally involved Sprint Nextel's incumbent agencies, Publicis & Hal Riney and TBWA\Chiat\Day in New York. Hal Riney dropped out along with TBWA, the agency for Apple which is launching a mobile device with AT&T. Young & Rubicam was eliminated from the review last week.
