The World: Los Angeles - Oscars relax rules on movie ads during telecast

Film studios will be able to advertise movies during the broadcasting of the Oscars for the first time since the Academy Awards moved to TV in the 50s.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences had banned film advertising due to concerns that it may have appeared that studios were influencing the outcome of the awards, but the ban was lifted following recommendations from a committee that studied the issue.

However, any studios that do use the awards ceremony to promote movies will have to adhere to certain rules, such as any nominated movies cannot be advertised, nor can any prequels or sequels to the nominees.
