The World: Cannes - Thielen named Media Person of the Year at Cannes

Gunter Thielen (pictured), the chairman and chief executive of Bertelsmann, has been named Media Person of the Year at the 2006 Cannes Lions.

The award honours prominent industry personalities. Thielen is being recognised for his leadership of Europe's largest media corporation, which owns businesses in the core markets of books (Random House), television (RTL), music (BMG) and magazines (Gruner & Jahr).

Terry Savage, the executive chairman of the Cannes Festival, said Thielen had demonstrated how "business excellence can go hand in hand with social responsibility".
