The World: Cannes - Microsoft's Ballmer set to land Cannes Lions gong

Steve Ballmer, the chief executive of Microsoft, is set to be named the media person of the year at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in June.

Ballmer, who joined Microsoft in 1980 when it had just 24 employees, took control of the direction of the software company following the retirement of Bill Gates, the Microsoft founder, last year.

As the chief executive, he has spearheaded the company's ultimately unsuccessful bid to take over Yahoo! and made the decision to cut 5,000 jobs to cope with the economic downturn.
