The localised versions of the channels will run on the TV platform AKTA, offering viewers science-fiction and entertainment programming, including blockbuster movies from distributors including NBC Universal, CBS Paramount and 20th Century Fox.
Colin McLeod, the managing director Central and Eastern Europe for NBC Universal Global Networks, said: "The launch of Universal Channel and Sci Fi forms part of a comprehensive growth strategy for Romania."
He added: "The channels feature distinctive series and movies which will quickly establish them as firm favourites with Romanian cable and satellite subscribers."
