Altmore-Lathom Schools Federation in East Ham, London and Tanbridge House School in Horsham were the winners of a competition to welcome an official Guinness World Records adjudicator to oversee the record attempt for today’s nationwide celebration of reading.

Up to 900 primary school pupils at Altmore-Lathom will attempt the record for the largest gathering of people dressed as nursery rhyme characters, creating their own costumes such as Hickory Dickory Dock, and Little Bo Peep. The current record is held by Brookmans Park School in Hertfordshire, which saw 396 children dress up.

Tanbridge House will attempt the record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Harry Potter characters. The school aims to have up to 500 people dressed up with robes and wands by the end of the day.

It is the 18th year World Book Day has been celebrated. Hundreds of local events have been planned in more than 100 countries around the globe through partnerships with publishers, booksellers and educational parties.
