The World: Beijing - Baidu search engine in $15 million online TV move

Baidu, the Chinese search engine, has spent $15 million to launch its own online TV station.

The investment means Baidu can own an 8.3 per cent stake in the online video platform UiTV, which will be used to operate the company's Internet TV channel.

The channel will allow users to download movies and TV shows authorised by platforms, including Enlight and TVB.

Baidu's plan to expand beyond its search-engine field has caused a backlash from competitors, with a number of social networking sites blocking Baidu from accessing its pages.
