The World: Barcelona - JCDecaux outfit retains Barcelona contract

JCDecaux's Spanish subsidiary, El Mobilario Urbano, has held on to the contract to run Barcelona's street furniture network following a pitch against Clear Channel, Viacom and Cemusa.

The outdoor ad company, which first won the contract in 1998, will be responsible for maintaining Barcelona's 3,500 advertising sites. The contract stipulates that El Mobilario Urbano installs 700 bus shelters, 1,100 bus stops, 600 bus station platforms, 250 Citylight panels and 15 public toilets.

It also includes new outdoor media such as interactive information screens and free data terminals, which can be accessed using a mobile phone.

"This contract strengthens our number-one position in the Spanish outdoor market," Jean-Charles Decaux, the JCDecaux founder, said.
