The Word apologises to Morrissey

LONDON - The Word magazine has apologised to singer Morrissey about comments that were made in an article in its March edition.

The apology has been made about an article written by veteran music journalist David Quantick on Morrissey's new greatest hits album. In it, Quantick referred to comments made in an article published by the NME in December, which is also the subject of legal action.

According to reports, the magazine's lawyer, Caroline Kean, has said that The Word accepted that it was "absurd to accuse Mr Morrissey of being racist" and that he was "not a hypocrite". The magazine has offered sincere apologies to the former Smiths frontman.

On The Word's , the publication is asking for readers to now let the matter lie. "You may have heard that a statement was made today in court pertaining to Morrissey and Word. We have nothing further to say about this issue and we're disabling comments on this thread. We would appreciate your cooperation," it said today.

In December the former Smith's singer accused the NME of labelling him a racist to boost its "dwindling circulation". He vowed today to carry on with the legal action against the magazine.

His solicitor, John Reid of Russells Solicitors, said: "My client is utterly determined to repair the damage done to his reputation following the statements made by the NME in December 2007 and more recently Word Magazine. The Word Magazine article would not have been published without the NME's original article so while Morrissey is pleased that the record has been set straight, he remains absolutely committed to pursuing his current action against the NME and its editor. Ultimately, my client would rather spend his time in concert than in court. Regrettably, he has had no choice but to institute both sets of proceedings in order to clear his name."
