Women targeted in latest police recruitment campaign

LONDON - The government is hoping to recruit more women to the police force with a new television ad in the celebrity 'Could You?' campaign, created by M&C Saatchi.

The latest ad features Lisa Potts, the kindergarten teacher who protected her class from a machete-wielding attacker in 1996. In the ad, she asks whether or not she would be able to investigate a suspected paedophile. The ad ends with the line "could you?".

The Home Office is also repeating an earlier spot featuring Lennox Lewis and will support the television campaign with radio and newspaper ads that focus on exploding myths and misconceptions about the police force. It is part of a move by the police to target women and ethnic minorities in order to increase the diversity of the force.

Hazel Blears, Home Office minister, said: "Although the number of women and minority ethnic officers has increased over the last decade, only 19% of officers are women, while only 2.9% are from minority ethnic communities, and in today's society that simply isn't good enough."

The high-profile campaign featured a number of well-known faces and celebrities as well as Lewis, including Falklands War veteran Simon Weston, musician Bob Geldof, former 'EastEnders' star Patsy Palmer and the footballer John Barnes.

In 2002, the Conservatives attacked the campaign, saying that in its first two years it had only attracted 400 new recruits, but these claims were denied by M&C Saatchi.

The government says that by the end of August 2003 there were 136,386 police officers in England and Wales, 9,000 more than when Labour came to power in 1997.

The government plans to spend 拢1.6m on police recruitment during the financial year.
