Christmas came early for sci-fi geeks as they got their first glimpse of the cast of the new Star Wars films this week. Microsoft and Nokia’s first joint ad registered much lower on the frenzy scale, but devoted techies still keenly dissected it. The first observation was that it resembled Apple’s classic "1984" spot – something that the ad’s scriptwriter takes as the highest praise, even if it was unintended. The soundtrack – The Kinks’ I’m Not Like Everybody Else – was interpreted as a nod to the company’s underdog status. While it is not groundbreaking work, it has done its job and set a tone for the brand post-takeover.
