Wilkinson Sword contests Gillette razor copy claim

Energizer, the parent company of Schick-Wilkinson Sword (SWS), has vigorously denied claims that its Quattro four-blade razor infringes Gillette's patents.

Gillette has attempted to stop the launch of Quattro by filing a lawsuit claiming that SWS has infringed the patented technology used in its Mach 3 razor.

In its first official response, Energizer denied the Quattro infringes patents and that it misappropriated Gillette's patented technology. It also denied claims that a four-blade razor would need to use the progressive blade configuration which Gillette claims is protected by its patents.

Energizer added that the patent is invalid and unenforcable.

SWS is to back the Quattro, which went on sale last week, with its biggest marketing and media campaign, featuring above-the-line activity, consumer sampling, PR and viral marketing, as well as highly visual point-of-sale at retail.

Energizer must now respond to Gillette's injunction by October 2. If Gillette is successful SWS could be forced to take the Quattro off the market.
