Tell us about the project. It is an extension of Marmite’s TV campaign. They wanted to shine a light on other areas of neglect and they had the brilliant idea of saving celebrities next. Together, we have created a really funny online film and the reaction has been amazing so far.
How did you feel when you were offered the role? Marmite approached me at the end of 2014 – they had already written a hilarious script and storyboarded the whole thing. I loved it and I was in. Marmite is a great brand and this is a fun storyline, so I was really happy they thought of me.
How did filming the ad contrast with working on EastEnders? We did the whole film in a day, which was very different. I had to learn to do magic tricks – badly – and work out any script edits while we filmed. It was a really interesting way of working, but the results speak for themselves. It has been a great project to work on.
What have you been doing since EastEnders? I’ve kept myself busy with TV appearances and theatre work. I did Extras with Ricky Gervais, which was loads of fun, and I had so many people tell me how much they enjoyed it. Obviously, I did I’m A Celebrity… which was also great. I have constantly worked, so I’m very lucky in that respect.
Do you still get recognised in the street? All the time. People are usually polite and many think they know me through the character of Robbie Jackson. When I’m out and about, someone will always mention EastEnders. I imagine it will be all about Marmite now!
What’s your favourite ad other than Marmite? I liked the old Tango ads, the ones with the big orange guy doing pranks and the giant wobbly orange hand. Everyone loved those ads. In school, that was all we did – copying the ads.
What’s your next project? I have a few exciting projects in discussions, including some theatre work.
