The Facebook-owned service had already offered a web version of its service but it is the first time users can download WhatsApp to use on their PC.
In a , WhatsApp said the app mirrors conversation and messages used on a user’s mobile device.
The company said: "Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you'll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more."
WhatsApp Web was launched in January 2015 but the service was not able to work with iPhones due to "Apple platform limitations".
The service, bought by Facebook for $22bn (£15.2bn) in 2014, is the biggest messaging app globally with a billion active users as of February 2016, .
