'We're all individuals' says new Gap drive starring SJP

LONDON - Gap is promoting the pursuance of individual style in its latest advertising campaign, starring its most recent celebrity signing, Sarah Jessica Parker, along with rocker Lenny Kravitz.

Moving away from its 1990s ethos, which included straplines such as "Everybody in Khakis", the new campaign centres on the question: "How do you wear it?".

Television ads starring Parker and Kravitz will appear in the US starting August 29, and a print campaign will run across September and October style magazines, featuring even more celebrities, such as Jada Pinkett Smith, Jessica Alba and the American footballer Tom Brady.

In the print ads, created by Laird+Partners and shot by Mikael Jansson, Parker customises her jeans with a velvet ribbon sewn down the legs to create a tuxedo trouser style. Another one of her looks features jeans cut just below the knee and enhanced with a ribbon bow at the hemline.

However, fans of Parker may have difficulty emulating a third look -- namely the one where she wears $10m worth of antique jewels from Fred Leighton.

Anyone who wants to learn to be an individual like Parker will be able to visit a special website launching on August 29, , or, in North America, visit a Show Us How You Wear It tour that will visit 10 cities in the US and Canada. At the tour, customers will be helped to customise their jeans and have their photo taken by a Gap photographer so that it looks as if they have appeared in a real Gap ad.

Gary Muto, president of Gap, said: "For 35 years, Gap has embraced individual style. Asking the world 'How Do You Wear It?' is an invitation for personal expression and a conscious effort to connect the brand more closely with customers."
