Wellbeing closure sees cuts at Boots

Boots is to axe about ten marketing jobs following last week's decision to close its Wellbeing Services operation and refocus on its core retail business.

The struggling retailer is also preparing a major restructure of its marketing department under its new marketing chief, Ann Francke. It is thought that the restructure will result in the loss of further jobs, although Boots said that plans were "at an early stage".

The job losses in the Wellbeing Services division, allied to the closure of the remaining six Pure Beauty stores, will amount to about 700 positions across Boots' Nottingham head office. Boots had aimed to open more than 50 Pure Beauty stores.

Among the roles being axed will be Carol Harvey's post as director of trading and operations for Wellbeing Services.

Harvey is a former head of marketing for Halfords and is understood to be in consultation over the possibility of finding another job at the company. Helen Oliver, head of marketing for Wellbeing Services, is also affected by the cuts, and she too is in consultation over another role.

Boots' decision to axe Wellbeing Services, which focused on targeting consumers with beauty treatments and alternative therapies, was greeted with little surprise by the City, which had branded the experiments an expensive flop.

The operation was conceived by chief executive Steve Russell, who is to leave when a replacement is found.
