Mktg Hi. I was just after some travel advice, really. I'm travelling to the Dominican Republic at the start of December and I'm just wondering what vaccinations I need?
Thomson Well, you are better off checking with your GP, they always get the most up to date information.
Mktg OK.
Thomson You're looking at hepatitis, polio, typhoid and tetanus.
Mktg Oh, OK.
Thomson I've been there two or three times.
Mktg Really? What is the weather like in December?
Thomson It's beautiful; that's probably one of the best times to go. Our winter is their summer, in effect.
Mktg I didn't know that.
Thomson What hotel are you staying at?
Mktg I'm staying in Confresi, but I'm not too sure of the hotel.
Thomson They have beautiful beaches there, and I highly recommend the monster truck safari.
Mktg Really? I didn't book it through Thomson, but I've just seen your ad offering tree travel advice.
Thomson That's fine. Do the monster truck safari, not the monster jeep one. The truck is a huge eight-by-eight army truck that takes you through rivers and things like that. You'll have a fantastic day. The white water rafting is good, as well.

Mktg What's the currency and language out there?
Thomson It's Dominican Peso, but the American dollar is widely accepted. You will have to pay an entry fee of $10 (US) at the airport, and $20 on departure. You'll be given a tourist visa to fill out when you go through customs.

Thomson It's very straightforward. Language-wise, they speak English there. Partly Spanish, but their English is fantastic. You'll love it. How long are you going for?
Mktg I think it's seven days; it's all last minute really. What are the temperatures like?
Thomson You'll be looking at at least 85 to 90. Just remember to have some trainers with you when you come home - it hurts your feet getting off the plane in the cold! (laughs).
Mktg Especially when you're wearing shorts as well. Ok, so I'll contact my GP about vaccinations.
Thomson Yes, I recommend it. A few jabs and some drops in your mouth and you'll be all set.
Mktg I haven't left it too late, have I?
Thomson Not at all, they usually advise you to have them about six weeks before you go.

Verdict
The call-handler was enthusiastic and easy to talk to. Although I had booked through another operator, she still wanted to hear about my plans, and even suggested things to do. I was expecting a sales technique to get me to book in the future, but this was not forthcoming, and there was no awkwardness, which will only encourage me to book with them next time.
