John West - Good morning, John West Foods.
Mktg - Hi, I'm just calling about a new product you're bringing in called ‘no can tuna'.
John West - No, it's ‘no drain tuna'.
Mktg - Oh yes, that's it.
John West - Yes?
Mktg - I was just calling for more information on it. I regularly by John West and it sounds interesting. How have they done it?
John West - It launched two weeks ago. It's in the major shops at the moment.
Mktg - So it's already launched?
John West - Oh yes.
Mktg - Oh right, how does it work then? I always assumed that brine was used to keep the tuna fresh. How have they done it?
John West - OK, I can put you through, I know a bit. It basically comes out of the can in one whole steak but they've got a new way of doing it where there's a moisture thing which keeps it all fresh and tight. But I'll put you through to someone. Hang on a second.
Mktg - Thanks [holds].
John West - Hello.
Mktg - Hi, I was speaking to a colleague of yours. I'm looking for some information on ‘no drain tuna'. How is it done?
John West - Basically they have found a way of taking the air out of the can, so you don't need as much brine, so the fish can't decompose if you like, so it keeps fresh. That's about as much as I know about it though I'm afraid.
Mktg - OK, I just thought that there was some kind of preservative in there.
John West - No, not at all. They've just found a way of keeping the air out, if you like.
Mktg - And it's still in a can?
John West - Yes.
Mktg - So it's like a sealed pack?
John West - Yes, its still in the same can as the normal tuna would be, it's just when the lid goes on, it removes the air.
Mktg - OK, thanks.
John West - Thanks, bye.
Verdict - Considering this was such a significant launch for John West, you would have expected the call-handlers to have had an in-depth briefing on the product. Although both call-handlers were friendly, I was unconvinced about the whole process of the ‘no drain' can, and would have to try to find out more detail by myself.
