We'll Call You - Frank

Mole has been known to dabble in the odd spliff (we never inhaled), so we rang the drugs advisory service to find out what its reclassification would mean for us

Frank Hi, you're through to Frank, how can I help?

Mktg Hi, I know that there are a few arguments going on at the moment about cannabis. I regularly smoke it but I'm not sure about its classification.

Frank Right, so you need to know the classification and law around it?

Mktg Yes.

Frank Right. It's different depending on your age - can I ask how old you are?

Mktg Yes, I'm in my mid-20s.

Frank OK, it's just different if you are under 18. Cannabis is a Class B drug, so the police will always confiscate it. If you are supplying it, even if you are just giving it to friends, it is potentially 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine.

Mktg So this argument at the moment, are they planning to change its classification?

Frank It has actually been changed, it is now a Class B.

Mktg In terms of how much you can have on you, can you get away with one spliff? Two?

Frank Well so much of it is down to the police judgement and your behaviour. Possession is potentially up to five years in prison, but it's always down to what the police can prove in the court.

Mktg A friend said that if you smoke it in your home, the police don't really have a problem with it.

Frank That would probably be a question for the police. I would say that if they know you are doing it, they are still going to act.

Mktg OK. I casually smoke it, but don't really want to continue. How do I stop?

Frank It depends on your habit, really. How much do you smoke?

Mktg A couple of times a week.

Frank [Call-handler describes specifics of the habit and refers to resources available to those who want to quit]. If you need any more support, call back. We are here 24/7.

Mktg Thank you.

Frank You're very welcome. Take care. Good luck.

Verdict

The call-handler was polite, and, as you would expect, talked very openly about drugs without being judgmental. He provided me with legal details and, when asked, offered support on how to go about quitting.
