The Week: Online News - Google drops discounts

Google is ending its agency discount scheme following pressure from advertisers for the search engine to deliver cheaper search campaigns.

The deal will see the Best Practice Funding programme, which offered £50 million in discounts for agencies running search campaigns, scrapped in 2009. Google had earmarked the discounts for agencies to invest in online training and research, but instead discovered they were passing them on to clients as a way of securing cheaper campaigns.
