The Week: OMD lands £800m Vodafone international media brief

Vodafone has appointed the Omnicom-owned media network OMD to handle its £800 million international media business after a pitch against WPP's Team Vodafone unit and the Aegis network Carat.

WPP is thought to have pushed OMD close in a process that covered all global markets where Vodafone is a wholly owned business, including the UK. However, OMD finally prevailed in a global pitch that superseded a series of local market pitches that had kicked off last year.

The appointment means OMD UK wins back the £58 million UK Vodafone business six months after losing it to Carat as part of that local process. This brief covers 20 markets, predominantly in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. However, it excludes the US, where Vodafone has a stake in Verizon Mobile.

OMD's recent international new-business success includes the capture of the pan-European Renault-Nissan business last year and the $200 million Monster.com global media business last month.
